The Dazzling Quilts of 19th-Century British Soldiers Are Threaded With Mystery

Very Complex Parti-Colored Quilt, US Civil War Era, in Melton wool, probably from uniforms, composed of thousands of tiny geometric forms stitched together by minute stitches, having a center of the British patriotic shields. This is surrounded by multiple bands of repeating large and small diamond fields and evenly spaced hex symbols, appliqued stars, hearts and flowers. Round flowering ivy on cream medallions edge all four sides, with maple leaves centered on the long sides. Similar to example on page 118 of the definitive book "Wartime Quilts: Appliques and Geometric Masterpieces from Military Fabric, from 300 BC to WWII" by Annette Gero, The Beagle Press, Roseville, NSW, Australia, 2015.
