Antique Sumatra Textile, Woman's Shoulder Shawl Gold Brocade in Excellent Condition Silk and gold wrapped thread in supplementary weft weaving technique, this sash is from West Sumatra where gold is highly prized as a status symbol. The original rectangle is folded lengthwise to conform to a sash shape. The plain portion of this sash, over which the top edge of a sarong would be folded and would therefore not be visible, is made of nondescript silk of factory make. The decorated area features bands of geometric design that has the gold threads facing front to maximize the opulence. The fringes have been tightly plaited and embellished with colored silk tassels on the ends, indicative of ceremonial use by a community leader, the penghulu.
