Putuo Zongcheng Temple — Chengde, China
The Putuo Zongcheng Temple 普陀宗乘之庙
is a grand Buddhist temple complex in Chengde, Hebei Province, built between 1767 and 1771 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong to celebrate his 60th birthday and his mother’s 80th birthday . It is one of the Eight Outer Temples of the Chengde Mountain Resort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Historical Significance
The temple was modeled after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, giving it the nickname “Little Potala Palace” . It reflects a fusion of Tibetan and Han Chinese architectural styles, with copper and gold-tiled roofs, fortress-like fortifications, and intricate decorations It also served as a venue for imperial meetings with ethnic envoys and witnessed historical events, such as the return of the Tuerhute tribe from exile
