MOCHI EMBROIDERED-
Mochi embroideries were done by the cobblers ( Mochi community ) of Bhuj - Kutch. The name mochi derives from the name of the community. Originally the mochi’s were shoe makers and their leather shoes were embroidered but during the reign of Rao Lakhpatji - 1741-1760. He patronised it and gave mochi embroiderers a special place in Royal court and asked them to make special and finest pieces for Aina Mahal interior and for family members. Later on the mochi embroidered pieces were made to be given as gift to the guests of Royal family and got highly flourished.
The technique of embroidery is just a chain stitch with wooden handled hook like tool. The embroidery majorly having a design of flowers, floral borders, birds, human figures and hunting scenes of royalty.
In other parts of Gujarat and in India and even in kutch one family does the same tecnique ( chain stitch ) of embroidery but that is called Aari embroidery. Its done with thin long needle hook and the fabric is laid out and straightened on frame and then embroidered.
Mochi embroidery was earlier done on fine silks and cotton with floss silk threads. on satin silk with silk threads.
